1º – The Luis I Bridge Porto – Portugal
The Dom Luis I Bridge is one of the most striking features of Porto.
Designed by Teophile Seyrig, Porto’s most famous bridge stretches for 172 meters and measures 44.6 meters in height. It is a beautiful iron construction, which replaced an earlier bridge, the granite posts of which can still be seen on the Porto side of the river.
This architectural and engineering masterpiece was constructed back in 1886, and was by far, ahead of its time. The double-decker bridge was initially designed to carry opposite road traffic; however this was changed, and today the top deck carries a railway line.
It spans the Douro River from the historic Ribeira neighbourhood of the city to Vila Nova de Gaia, where you will find the majority of the famous port wine cellars.
