The title of this blog, Rain and the Rhinoceros, is named after a beautiful essay written by Thomas Merton. With the simplicity of the rain in mind, the essay reflects on Ionesco’s play Rhinoceros. The essay is a radical critique of the spirituality of capitalism and industrialization. In the midst of the sounds of modern industry, Merton calls the human race to join the rain instead, in solitude with God.This essay inspired me to begin to think outside the box of modernity and its claims of progress. Perhaps dancing in the rain can be more than simply a retreat from the ills of the present age. The purpose of this blog is to provide a forum for reflection on theology, culture, politics, the rain and the rhinoceros.

I admit that a lot of what I’ve read is (WAY)over my head, but occasionally I’ve found treasures. I have come to respect what you have to say. Thankyou for sharing what you have learned and what you are learning.
